Eliminating Bed Bugs, Creating Peace of Mind

Staten Island Housing Authority Apartments Infested with Bed Bugs, Family sues city!

Bed Bugs Problems have resulted in Staten Island Family suing the City!

The Staten Island Housing Authority apartments have had a bed bug infestation for the last year according to a resident. The bed bug problem has been treated by bed bug exterminators in NYC but they still have bed bugs! The article below from the Staten Island Live tells you more about what this family experienced in their Staten Island Housing Authority and how their bed bug problems haven’t been solved yet!

Article from the Staten Island Live:

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Blanche Aponte’s children haven’t had a sleepover for more than a year.

They haven’t even invited friends over to hang around their Mariners Harbor apartment since the summer of last year.

But it’s not because they’re being punished for misbehaving.

Rather, the Mariners Harbor mother of three said a year-long bed-bug infestation has forced her family into a self-imposed exile of sorts in their apartment inside a city Housing Authority complex.

Now, at their wit’s end, Ms. Aponte and her husband, Jose Aponte, have sued the Housing Authority, seeking relief.

“We’re miserable,” Ms. Aponte, 45, said in a telephone interview last week.

“You’re not happy. You don’t want to be here. When people hear ‘bed bugs,’ they think you’re dirty. I clean my house. It’s humiliating, it really is.”

The suit filed in state Supreme Court, St. George, demands unspecified monetary damages.

The Apontes are being represented by the West Brighton-based law firm, Kuharski, Levitz & Giovinazzo.

A Housing Authority spokeswoman said last week the agency doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

PARASITIC CRITTERS

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control’s website, bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic, wingless reddish-brown critters which feed solely on the blood of sleeping humans and animals.

Bed bugs are found throughout the country, everywhere from hovels to five-star hotels.

However, their presence isn’t indicative of the cleanliness of the living conditions where they’re found.

While not considered a health hazard — bed bugs aren’t known to spread disease — they can be a nuisance.

Their bites typically cause itching, and, in some cases, can cause serious allergic reaction requiring medical attention, the CDC said.

Ms. Aponte said she’s resided in her Brabant Street apartment for about 18 years. She had no bed-bug issues until August of last year.

The insects have made her life a living hell since, she said.

“They started to spread,” said Ms. Aponte. “It’s rampant now. It’s through the whole house.”

She’s complained repeatedly to the Housing Authority.

SENT EXTERMINATOR

And while the agency sent an exterminator to her apartment seven or eight times, the pests haven’t been eliminated, she said.

“All it seems like it does is agitate them,” said Ms. Aponte. “It’s just to the point where you want to throw everything away.”

Ms. Aponte said she’s asked to be moved to another location, but the Housing Authority hasn’t complied.

She said other apartments in her building also have a bed-bug problem.

The bed-bug bites have left sores and scabs on her son and two daughters, who range in age from 16 to 12, she said.

“They look like chicken pox,” said Ms. Aponte.

She said her 14-year-old daughter, Inez, had to stop modeling because of the bites on her arms.

There are other less visible scars, she said.

Her children haven’t had friends over and are also reluctant to go to their friends’ homes for fear of carrying bedbugs there.

“It’s embarrassing,” she said. “They’re been pretty miserable the last year and a half.”

According to the CDC website, bed bugs travel in seams and folds of luggage, overnight bags, folded clothes, bedding, furniture and anywhere else they can hide.

But, Ms. Aponte said she and her family have no place to hide from their tormentors.

“I just want the problem fixed so I can live a normal life again with my family,” she said.
